The Basic On-Page SEO Techniques That Every Web Owner Should Know

I'm no expert at search engine optimization (SEO). But since I started freelance writing, I have had clients on the SEO industry. From this, I've learned some of the basics. And among those that I have learned is on-page SEO.

To put it simply, on-page SEO consists of optimization strategies that mostly deal with the content and keywords "on" your website. And if you own a website, you should not miss applying the following on-page SEO strategies:

Include keywords on your web page URL or permalink.

Many website owners do not give a damn on their web page URL since they only depend on the automatic generation of their permalink. Most content management systems automatically generates your web page URL. Take a look at mine:

My automatic permalink generates "the-basic-on-page-seo-techniques-that" as my web page URL for this blog post. Do you think it's good? No. It's incomplete and doesn't really give a concrete idea as to what the page is about.

But if I'm not lazy enough to customize my web page URL, I can change it to this "basic-on-page-seo-techniques." This is more readable, right? And at the same time, my web page URL is more properly optimized.

Your targeted keywords should be present in your headline.

So in this article, I'm hoping that it would rank for the keyword phrase "basic on page seo techniques." Is this keyword phrase present in my headline? Yes.

It is important to include your targeted keywords in your headlines because the search engines "scan" your article from the top. Hence, you have to help the search engines and give them a clue on what is your article about by including your targeted keywords right from the start.

Use the <h2> and <h3> tags when formatting your headings or subheadings.

Have you noticed that this article's headings are larger and bolder than the rest of the main content? I do not simply make their font size bigger or bold them. I use the <h2> tags to highlight them.

If you use the <h2> and <h3> tags in your content, you are showing the search engines your content's structure. The search engines also rank your website based on the use of heading tags.

The <h1> tag is already reserved for your headline. If you are using WordPress or Blogger, you just have to type your title on the title field, and when you hit publish, it is already coded with <h1> tags.

But for your content's headings and subheadings, you have to select and highlight the words first. Since I'm using Blogger, I only need to select from these settings:

Add meta tags.

Meta tags are keywords that describe your web page. They do not exactly appear on your actual content, but they are included in your page's code. So that when someone searches for your meta tags on Google, your content could possibly appear.

For example, I've wanted this blog post to appear for the search queries "basic on page seo techniques" and "best on page seo techniques" so I included them as meta tags or labels as called in Blogger.

Include a meta description.

A meta description is like the introductory summary of your content. Again, like meta tags, a meta description does not appear on your actual content. Instead, it appears on the search engine results such as the following:

It would be best if you include your targeted keywords in the meta description so that your content will be more likely to show up in the search results. But then again, insert your keywords seamlessly in your meta description.

There are other on-page SEO techniques but these are the basic ones which you could do even without too much technical SEO knowledge.

Many people hate SEO-ed content, because whenever they hear the word SEO, they'd only think of it as something bad... a content that is keyword stuffed.

But if you are able to pull these basic on-page SEO techniques off, you are doing a favor to yourself to make your content more visible to the search engines.
